Microsoft 365 Education updates

This message is to inform you of two updates coming to Microsoft 365 Education, which will be publicly disclosed August 1, 2023. Important: do not share announcements with customers until made public on August 1st. Office 365 A1 Plus program will retire August 1, 2024. Microsoft will retire the Office 365 A1 Plus program, a free subscription that includes Office 365 desktop apps for qualified schools that purchased Office 365 institution-wide for faculty and staff. Today, Microsoft 365 A3 and A5 licenses are easier to provision, since both address customer requirements and the need for a transitional program. All existing Office 365 A1 Plus licenses will expire August 1, 2024. Note: Office 365 A1 will continue to be free to Education customers. Microsoft 365 Education storage updates coming August 1, 2024. Microsoft is introducing changes to storage offerings across our Microsoft 365 for Education suite. Beginning August 1, 2024, all school tenants will receive 100TB of free pooled storage across OneDrive, SharePoint, and Exchange, with an additional 50GB or 100GB of pooled storage per paid user for A3 and A5 subscriptions, respectively (not including student-use benefits). With pooled storage, schools’ total storage limit is the maximum amount of storage all users combined can use. Additionally, effective February 1, 2024, users of Office 365 A1 (free subscription) will be limited to a maximum of 100GB for OneDrive storage, within the 100TB of pooled storage for the school tenant. Schools will have the option to purchase incremental storage based on their needs. Microsoft will provide tools for visibility into current storage to manage customer usage. With change comes opportunity. The changes for Microsoft 365 provide opportunities to upsell customers to higher-value subscriptions along with services to support customers through their migrations. Examples include services to support security, data governance, and moving stored files to cold storage in Azure.
